UKRAINIAN AGRICULTURAL
LAND REMEDIATION

As a result of the hostilities,

more than 5 million hectares
(
50,000 sq km)

of Ukraine's agricultural land is currently unusable due to potential contamination by unexploded mines and ammunition, heavy metals and other hazardous substances that may have been released into the soil.

THOSE WHO SUFFER THE MOST FROM THIS ARE

  • Ukraine's small and medium-sized farmers who are unable to cultivate their land or risk their lives every day by working uninspected fields;

  • Rural communities, from which villagers who have lost their jobs are leaving en masse;

  • Farmers, who are unable to pay land rent to owners of land shares;

  • The Ukrainian economy, which has lost foreign currency and tax revenues;

  • Pensioners and socially vulnerable groups of the Ukrainian population who do not receive pensions and other benefits;

  • The population of countries that depend on the supply of products from Ukraine (Somalia, Tunisia, Libya, Mauritania, Gambia, Egypt, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Eritrea);

  • Every person who may potentially receive a product that has absorbed heavy metals or other substances potentially hazardous to health and life.

WHY IS THE UKRAINIAN AGRICULTURAL LAND REMEDIATION PROJECT NEEDED

  • Survey of Ukrainian agricultural lands for the presence of heavy metals and other potentially hazardous elements that may adversely affect the final product of cultivation;

  • Providing specific recommendations for land remediation in case of deviations from the norms, including sustainable land cultivation, application of necessary preparations, cultivation of certain crops, use of modern soil cultivation technologies, including providing explanations and calculations on the potential of using CO2 sequestration mechanisms;

  • Assistance and support of farmers' activities at the entire stage of implementation of the recommendation with recording of the final result;

  • Creation of databases on the state of land of each farmer/farm, construction of analytical models and mapping and updating of information on the state of land in accordance with the dynamics of the project development on an online map.
